Species Selection of Aging for the Sake of Diversity

چکیده
In their paper, “Punctuated Equilibria: An Alternative to Phyletic Gradualism”, Eldredge and Gould (1972) argue that most evolution occurs during geologically rapid speciation events, with species exhibiting stasis the vast majority of the time. Gould (2002, 2007) demonstrates that an implication of Punctuated Equilibrium is that selectionist theory is expanded to the level of species defining species as basic units of macroevolution. In our paper, we demonstrate the evolution of aging rates in a species selection scenario. We have developed an ALife simulation environment with mating governed by evolving compatibility signatures, resulting in the formation of reproductively isolated subpopulations (i.e., species). Given a co-evolving parasite population, heterogeneity in a host subpopulation is beneficial for the health of that subpopulation. This can result in group selection pressure at the species level for the evolution of altruistic traits, such as a faster aging rate.

A Simulation Study of the Evolution of Aging
The wide disparity in longevity observed across species indicates that aging is a species characteristic. However, the obvious fitness costs of aging on individual reproduction would cause strong selection pressure against it. In this paper we have developed an adaptive hypothesis of aging for the sake of group diversity. Our hypothesis relies on a group selection mechanism, which we argue supe...
متن کاملComparison of Phylogenetic and Evolutionary of Nucleotide Squences of HVR1 region of Mitochondria genom in Goats and Other Livestock Species
Maintaining genomic diversity in goat populations in different parts of Iran is essential for breeding programs, increasing production, survival, resistance to diseases, and various environmental changing conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the sequence of HVR1 from the mitochondrial genome of Iranian native goats including Sistani, Pakistani, Black and Lorry ecotypes...

The aim of present study was comparison of plant diversity in managed and control compartments of Jamand district in Noshahr (Mazandaran province). Random-systematic sampling method with network dimension of 100×200 m was used to locate samples. Sampling plot area was 400 m2 to survey woody species and 100 m2 plots was set up to herbaceous species (in the center of main plots). At each sample p...
متن کاملComparative Study of Species Diversity in different Land Use Units of the Borana Lowlands, Southern Oromia, Ethiopia
Quantitative study of species diversity across different land use units and districts is important to document status of local plant biodiversity, to evaluate impact of management and for planning future management. This study aimed at determining impacts of land use units on species diversity and spatial distribution of species in two districts of Borana zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. Stratification ...
متن کاملنوع گونههای گیاهی علفی و چوبی در رابطه با موقعیتهای مختلف فیزیوگرافی با استفاده از شاخصهای عددی و غیرعددی در جنگلهای کوهستانی زاگرس
Numerical and parametrical indices are two of the most important and most widely used indices for assessing biodiversity in different societies. Nevertheless, their efficiency and selection in various ecosystems has always been one of the challenging issues of ecology. In this study, the numerical indices of diversity, richness and eveness, as well as abundance–ranking distribution models inclu...
